Choosing a web host

There are a few important factors to consider when deciding who you want to host your website. Obviously, the primary concern is reliability. What good is your website if the server is down? It’s a good idea to choose a web host who has been around for a while, and sometimes the best choice is not a company that offers strictly web hosting but has an insight into web design as well.

You may want a friendly atmosphere where your questions are answered, there is somebody you can talk to who is not an outsourced support representative from another country, but actually a person sitting in the office of the business hosting your site. Another advantage to this, is the likelihood that they offer other related services that could drastically improve your success.

Since business on the Internet started to boom around the turn of the century, many people realized that every single website, every single business, every entrepreneur needs a web host. Web hosting that is provided by local ISP’s can be restrictive and only useful for putting up personal or small business websites. For these reasons, among others, many web hosting companies have popped up all over the world trying to do one up on the others. Be careful when choosing a web host, you don’t want to end up with your corporate website on some pseudo-hosting company’s VPS rented with Dad’s credit card, you never know when dad might finally see that unrecognized charge on his credit card.

A few key things to look for are the company’s name, address, and phone number. If you can’t find any of these, chances are the company is not reputable. Try searching for them around the Internet, see what you can find, but remember to take it with a grain of salt, sometimes people like to misdirect anger or frustration, such as somebody hosting an illegal site who gets shut down by their host and then screams bloody murder about it everywhere online. When you think you’ve found one you like, try giving them a phone call, how one handles themselves on the phone can usually give you a pretty good indication of what your experience with them might be like. And of course, you can start with us first :)

Introduction to Web Programming

What is web programming? Web programming has many names, faces and venues, including but not limited to; JavaScript, VbScript, Java, .Net programming, Ajax, PHP, CGI, CFML, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Python, Perl, XML, C and C++, ASP, Flash and more. The purpose of web programming, is to provide a means to interact with the user, or visitor. Whether you need to collect information from your visitors and store it in a database, or perhaps you want to build a custom online game for your visitors to play, you will need to implement some form of web programming into your website. Since there are so many to choose from, where should you start? Start with familiarizing yourself with the general concepts, the common terms and jargon, and the common uses for the different web programming languages. If you are not an experienced programmer, and you need to set up some scripts we recommend enlisting the services of a professional, but before you do that, the better understanding you have of the concepts the easier it is to work with your programmer or web development firm to reach your goals for your website. First, we will give you a basic introduction into the more popular Internet programming languages used most commonly for web development.
In our next installment we will begin with Java.
